Changing the Way We Build Characters

If you are like us, you've probably built more characters than you will ever play. But what if you had to play a character to build them? The idea is that as a 0 level character, you play in a short mini-campaign that showcases an influential time in your character's life that shaped who they would become. We discuss how this work with starting with only 2d6 in each ability score, gaining stats, skill, languages and spells as your character blossoms. We also discuss some fun ways to take the levels out of leveling up, and look at ways exciting ways to motivate players to lean into the role play of character development.

We also discuss the idea of "rolling with emphasis" -- taking the most extreme result from rolling two d20s.

Role Play vs Roll to Play

In a game where players obsess over optimization, and DMs call for skill checks around every corner, it's important to remember that the dice aren't everything (sorry to all you who have crippling dice addictions). Sometimes the rules in D&D just don't make sense, but instead of just arbitrating some sort of ability check -- we recommend you call for a narration check.

This week, we look at how this plays out against magical traps. When a player, probably the rogue, decides they want to disarm the magical trap, the DMG says it is an Intelligence(Arcana) check to do so. But what if they aren't proficient in Arcana, or know anything about glyphs or spellcasting? Does it make any sense? Instead of just calling for the Ability check, you might instead ask a player, "Tell us how it is with your background that you think you know how to disarm this. Describe for us what you do." This may require the DM going into a bit more detail about the glyphs or the nature of the trap, so as to give the PC something to work with. What happens next will only make the game better.

There are some subclasses which no one plays because, well, they kind of suck. We often ask what it would take to make them suck less -- but also not to get too overpowered that they make the DM want to pull out their hair. This week both Jay and Jack bring some ideas together on what the Banneret subclass (aka Purple Dragon Knight) is all about (leadership), and how to bring out the best of that theme.

We look to try to fix features if we can, or possibly replace them with something similar but functionally better -- like how do we improve on a feature connected to Second Wind or Action Surge, when both of those are so limitied in uses. We also try adding a few new features (bonus action: help) to make this subclass one of the most supportive fighters in the game, something that's a bit lacking within the class.

The Holy Con Man

Once again we offer a look at how to break out of tired tropes: this time with the Bard. Internet memes would have you believe that these characters only reason to exist is to seduce everything they come in contact with. So we want to go a different direction with this build, what if our bard is really very good at preaching and has found a home within religion -- and not just one religion. In fact, he's talked his way into every religion in town.

The acolyte background affords shelter to PCs who share the same religion as a temple or church they find...but what if a College of Eloquence Bard, with their Silver Tongue, convinces those who run the temple or church that he is, in fact, a priest within their religion (even if he's really not). Well, then it's healing for all his friends and a modest lifestyle for our bard. The trick is simply not to forget whcih religious ceremonies he needs to perform each day.

Let's Build: Creating a Darklord Using Random Tables

We dive into a different type of build this week. Instead of making a character, we are building a nemesis for our players -- someone truly evil, someone beyond redemption. Join us as we dig into Chapter 2 of Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft and build a Darklord of our own.

We also tap into some tables from Xanathar's, the DMG and even turn some cards from the Tarroka deck. And the fates do not disappoint us.

Meet Felix Shepard, owner/operator of The Harth Casino and Hotel -- a dread domain. He and his sentient walking stick stroll the gaming floors, ever hungry for more money. He calls the stick Mother, and it seems to talk telepathically to him. Few know the true secret to his dark powers -- and if they do they probably don't have long to live. Born to wealth, he was also a natural born liar and a cheat -- and made a sport out of it. But sometimes he would lose, and in those moments he would be desperate to use family wealth to dig himself out. He seals his Dark Fate the terrible night when he confronts his mother for her money, knowing that if she refused, he would simply kill her and claim it as inheritance. Which he does. Then whileattempting to burn the house down to hide the evidence of him bludgeoning her to death with a firepoker, he gets trapped in the house and burnt alive with her. He awakens to find himself the new owner of his very own Domain of a Dread, a casino and hotel that he can never truly leave -- but can repeatedly burn to the ground. And he finds that the firepoker has transformed into a powerful weapon -- and artifact that houses the haunting spirit of his mother, and that he cannot willingly let go of.

Sorcerer Redux: Better With Spell Points

In the back of the DM's Guide is an often overlooked section about using spell points instead of spell slots. While many dismiss this as too confusing, on closer examination, this might be just the ticket for giving sorcerers that extra love they deserve...that and a few other tweaks, like light armor proficieny and Constitution as their casting ability.

Also we take the training wheels off of Metamagic, allowing Sorcerers to truly demonstrate their full potentionial. Why limit them to just one metamagic option per spell? That would be like limiting a Monk to just one Monk feature per attack. What fun is that? We talk about fun ways you can spend from your enlarged spell point pool on multiple Metamagic options. And we look at some other features that Sorcery Points could be spent on. This class is starting to look good!

The Raven Ranger: Building the Right Character for The Setting

We all like to build cool, interesting characters. We like breaking tropes, and coming up with original concepts. But often that's not enough. This episode, we look at not just building a good character, we look at building "the right character".

Even the best character build will be terrible if they don't fit in with the setting, and they don't fit in with the rest of the party. To get it right, players and DMs need to work together. The DM must be willing to discuss details about the world, to give away little pieces of the story to the player, and in exchange take little pieces of the character's backstory and make them part of the world.

We look at how we have done this with an unusual Swarmp Keeper Ranger build that is designed to be played in a "Ravenloft" setting -- just in time for the arrival of Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft. See link to character sheet below.

Turning a Old Subclass Into New Gold

This week we hope to inspire you to re-examine subclass features you may have overlooked. We take a second look at a the Forge Domain Cleric, and in particular their unique Channel Divinity. Join us as we discuss how our Kobold cleric build would potentially generate hundreds of gold coin per day, just through an act of devotion to their diety.

The idea is that as part of their daily prayers, the Kobold would perform their Channel divintiy to break down ordinary metal into precious gold. And then, depending how you roleplay them, either give it to the poor and needy, give it to their beloved dragon diety, or maybe just let the party spend it on magic items and stuff.

Multiclassing With Two Spellcasting Classes

The Book of Hordes — The mechanics and monsters presented in this book are meant for use by DMs who wish to introduce larger-scale, grand battles, without the hassle of tracking a score of hit points and turns. Running monsters as hordes allows for faster, more simple turns, without the micro-managing required for fighting a large group of individual monsters. This simplifies the combat two-fold. First, DMs have less things to track, and can focus their attention on the storytelling and world-building. Playing All The Three Pillars

There has never been a better time to play D&D -- but only if you touch all the Three Pillars of Game Play: Exploration, Roleplay (social interaction) and Combat. We look at which classes are best at bringing each pillar into your game, enriching your D&D experience, and making your next campaign even more interesting.

Sometimes, it's ok not to be the character that can do the most damage during combat. There are lots of ways to prove your worth. Can you give your teammates advantage on their attacks, did you heal them when they were close to death, did you maybe use your charm to prevent the fight from even happening in the first place? What does exploration mean? And how can you build a character that makes opening up that pillar of gameplay easier for everyone at the table? Investigation or Perception? Jack choses #TeamPerception and explains why.

Also: how much homebrew should you allow in your campaign? Does that include Unearthed Arcana? And why it's usually more ok to play a really underpowered character than an overpowered one. (Hint: It's all about fairplay, and the enjoyment of all the players at the table.)
