The Holy Con Man

Once again we offer a look at how to break out of tired tropes: this time with the Bard. Internet memes would have you believe that these characters only reason to exist is to seduce everything they come in contact with. So we want to go a different direction with this build, what if our bard is really very good at preaching and has found a home within religion -- and not just one religion. In fact, he's talked his way into every religion in town.

The acolyte background affords shelter to PCs who share the same religion as a temple or church they find...but what if a College of Eloquence Bard, with their Silver Tongue, convinces those who run the temple or church that he is, in fact, a priest within their religion (even if he's really not). Well, then it's healing for all his friends and a modest lifestyle for our bard. The trick is simply not to forget whcih religious ceremonies he needs to perform each day.

Let's Build: Creating a Darklord Using Random Tables

We dive into a different type of build this week. Instead of making a character, we are building a nemesis for our players -- someone truly evil, someone beyond redemption. Join us as we dig into Chapter 2 of Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft and build a Darklord of our own.

We also tap into some tables from Xanathar's, the DMG and even turn some cards from the Tarroka deck. And the fates do not disappoint us.

Meet Felix Shepard, owner/operator of The Harth Casino and Hotel -- a dread domain. He and his sentient walking stick stroll the gaming floors, ever hungry for more money. He calls the stick Mother, and it seems to talk telepathically to him. Few know the true secret to his dark powers -- and if they do they probably don't have long to live. Born to wealth, he was also a natural born liar and a cheat -- and made a sport out of it. But sometimes he would lose, and in those moments he would be desperate to use family wealth to dig himself out. He seals his Dark Fate the terrible night when he confronts his mother for her money, knowing that if she refused, he would simply kill her and claim it as inheritance. Which he does. Then whileattempting to burn the house down to hide the evidence of him bludgeoning her to death with a firepoker, he gets trapped in the house and burnt alive with her. He awakens to find himself the new owner of his very own Domain of a Dread, a casino and hotel that he can never truly leave -- but can repeatedly burn to the ground. And he finds that the firepoker has transformed into a powerful weapon -- and artifact that houses the haunting spirit of his mother, and that he cannot willingly let go of.

The Raven Ranger: Building the Right Character for The Setting

We all like to build cool, interesting characters. We like breaking tropes, and coming up with original concepts. But often that's not enough. This episode, we look at not just building a good character, we look at building "the right character".

Even the best character build will be terrible if they don't fit in with the setting, and they don't fit in with the rest of the party. To get it right, players and DMs need to work together. The DM must be willing to discuss details about the world, to give away little pieces of the story to the player, and in exchange take little pieces of the character's backstory and make them part of the world.

We look at how we have done this with an unusual Swarmp Keeper Ranger build that is designed to be played in a "Ravenloft" setting -- just in time for the arrival of Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft. See link to character sheet below.

Big Shoes To Fill: Playing with Giants

Jack and Jay go up the beanstalk this week to talk about all about something really big: giants! We work our way through the Ordning (social structure), from lowly playable giant-kin like Goliaths and Firbolgs, all the way to the top of the clouds and into the storms! We talk about their magic, their runes, their culture -- and even some fun ways to have a fog giant as your warlock's patron.

We dig through lore hidden away in forgotten tomes (Volo's Guide to Monsters, Dndbeyond, and ForgottenWiki) to paint the larger than life picture of giant life. Tune in for loads of fun ideas on how to incorporate giants into your campaign, or how to build a one-shot around them. Also, learn a cool way to introduce a new halfling character to your party via a giant!
